BELIEFS
THE BIBLE
The Holy Bible, and only the Bible, is the authoritative Word of God. It alone is the final authority in determining all doctrinal truths. In its original writing, it is inspired, infallible and inerrant.
II Timothy 3:16, II Peter 1:20-21, Proverbs 30:5, Romans 16:25-26
TRINITY
There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and co-eternal.
I John 5:7, Genesis 1:26, Matthew 3:16-17; 28:19, Luke 1:35, Isaiah 9:6, Hebrews 3:7-11
JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is God the Son, the second person of the Trinity. On earth, Jesus was 100% God and 100% man in 100% unity. He is the only man ever to have lived a sinless life. Jesus Christ was conceived by God the Father, through the Holy Spirit in the virgin Mary’s womb, performed miracles, died on the cross for mankind and thus, atoned for our sins through the shedding of His blood. He rose from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures, ascended to the right hand of the Father, intercedes for the Saints, and will return again in power and glory.
John 1:1,14; 20:28, Matthew 1:18, 25, Luke 1:35, Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:18, 23-25, Luke 1:27-35, I Timothy 3:16, Isaiah 9:6, Philippians 2:5-6, I Timothy 2:5
SALVATION
We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ; His death, burial and resurrection. Salvation is a gift from God, not a result of our good works or of any human efforts.
Ephesians 2:8-9, Galatians 2:16, 3:8, Titus 3:5, Romans 10:9-10, Acts 16:31, Hebrews 9:22
HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is God, the Lord and giver of life, who was active in the Old Testament and is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He empowers the saints for service and witness, cleanses man from the old nature, and conforms us to the image of Christ.
Given at Pentecost, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the promise of the Father, sent by Jesus after His Ascension, to empower the Church to preach the Gospel throughout the whole earth. The Holy Spirit is manifested through a variety of spiritual gifts to build and sanctify the church, demonstrate the validity of the resurrection, and confirm the power of the Gospel. All believers are biblically encouraged to earnestly desire the manifestation of the gifts in their lives. These gifts always operate in harmony with the Scriptures and should never be used in violation of biblical parameters.
Joel 2:28-29, Matthew 3:11, Mark 16:17, Acts 1:5,2:1-4, 17, 38-39, 8:14-17, 10:38, 44-47, 11:15-17, 19:1-6, Hebrews 2:4, Romans 1:11,12:4-8, Ephesians 4:16, II Timothy 1:5-16, 4:14, I Corinthians 12:1-31; 14:1-40, I Peter 4:10
CHURCH
The Church is the Body of Christ, the habitation of God through the Spirit, with divine appointments for the fulfillment of Jesus’ Great Commission. Every person who is born of the Spirit is an integral part of the Church as a member of the body of believers. There is a spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:22, 2:19-22, Hebrews 12:23, John 17:11, 20-23
RESURRECTION AND SECOND COMING
Jesus Christ was physically resurrected from the dead in a glorified body three days after His death on the cross. In addition, both the saved and the lost will be resurrected; they that are saved to the resurrection of life, and they that are lost to the resurrection of eternal damnation. Jesus Christ will physically and visibly return to earth for the second time to establish His Kingdom. This will occur at a date undisclosed by the Scriptures.
Luke 24:16, 36, 39, John 2:19-21, 20:26-28, 21:4, Acts 24:15, I Corinthians 15:42, 44, Philippians 1:21-23, 3:21, Matthew 24:30, 26:63-64, Acts 1:9-11, I Thessalonians 4:15-17, II Thessalonians 1:7-8, Revelation 1:7
CORE VALUES
BIBLE
We value the Bible as God’s revealed truth and the catalyst for life transformation and change. The Word of God is one of the greatest gifts He has given us. It’s so many things – divinely inspired, relevant, applicable, perfect, supernatural, simple, complex, comforting and challenging. It literally is the last word – nothing will be added to it and it has the final say in questions of how we live our lives, lead our families, and function as a church.
The Bible is not a self-help book; it’s not a collection of ancient sayings that may or may not apply in today’s world, and it’s not a mysterious book of answers to life’s most confusing questions. More than anything else, the Bible shows us who God is. As we come to know God and walk deeper in relationship with Him through reading His Word, He begins to change us. In the process, God gives us His character. What comes natural to Him that’s so hard for us (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, compassion, mercy, justice, etc.) begins to show up in our lives.
MISSION
Reaching people. Building lives. We value the mission of God to reach and redeem individuals, families, neighborhoods, and beyond. From the Garden to the Red Sea, from the wilderness to the promised land, from Nazareth to Calvary, and throughout all of history, God has been at work to love, save and restore people. And now that story continues in each of our lives.
As a loving Father, God initiates this process – He loves us, calls us, and pursues us long before we look for Him. His greatest desire is for all of us to turn from lives lived for ourselves to receive the life God’s created us to live. When we do, He invites all of us to join Him in His mission in our own unique way. Though our contributions are different, God values them all as we give and contribute to what He’s doing in the lives of people.
Jesus told His disciples that the mission would start in their city (Jerusalem) then spread to the surrounding regions (Judea, Samaria) and then to the ends of the earth. At South Bay, we want to follow that pattern. God’s mission starts in our hearts, works through our families, impacts our neighborhoods, affects our entire city and then keeps spreading to the ends of the earth.
SPIRITUAL FAMILY
The Bible makes it clear that God builds through family, both natural and spiritual. God has called all believers to be a part of a healthy spiritual family.
God Himself, sets the lonely in families. (Psalm 68:6). God has never been about building a religion, a philosophy, or a movement, He’s building a family. A spiritual family is made up of God’s children, coming together to love God, worship, sacrificially give, and serve one another. Jesus said that the world would know we love Him by the way that we love each other. Yet, so many people feel alone, they feel unloved, the feel insignificant, and what they really want is to feel like they belong. This is where the Church comes in.
We believe the church should be a safe place where people can be honest, where they can share their challenges, where they can wrestle with truth and where they can look for help in a time of need. People matter to God and He wants all of us to experience His love through genuine spiritual family. This doesn’t happen through coming together for a few hours a week – it’s what happens when people are joined together and do life together.
DEVELOPMENT
We value a lifestyle of worship that leads to the ongoing process of development in the life of every believer. We’re all works in progress. We’re not who we once were, and we’re not yet who we will become. We should be able to see this ongoing process of development in the life of every believer as we grow closer to God.
Religion leaves you empty. You may learn some rules and some new words and phrases. You may learn how to act during a service, what you should say and what you shouldn’t say but in the end, nothing on the inside changes. But when we fully engage with God, when we give our whole hearts and every area of our lives, we don’t just “worship” during a service, we live a lifestyle of worship. Whatever we do, we do it to honor God and to show Him that we love Him. When we live this way, we’ll never stop growing.
GENEROSITY
We value the biblical principle of giving our first fruits to God and believe that generosity transforms our lives as Christ followers. When we give, we affirm our commitment to the ongoing mission of South Bay Church: reaching people and building lives. As we continue to give generously with our time, talent and our resources, we believe we’ll experience the joy of seeing God transform lives.
One of the most powerful things about generosity is the truth that it always makes a difference in the life of both the one who gives and the one who receives. And remember, when you give your tithe (10% of your income), you are acting in obedience and worship to God, inviting His blessing in all areas of life (Malachi 3:10).
